The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) today announced the reintroduction of mobile speed and alcohol control squads on national roads with the aim of reducing road accidents.
According to the spokesman for the General Command of the PRM, Leonel Muchina, the measure is due to the growing number of fatalities on the country's roads, and pointed to yesterday's accident in the district of Gondola, Manica province, which resulted in more than 20 deaths, and the fact that 37 people have died in road accidents in the country in the last ten days.
According to Muchina, the Gondola accident and others were caused by excessive speed and irregular maneuvers.
"As measures to be adopted to prevent road accidents, we are announcing the reactivation and introduction of mobile speed and alcohol control squads, especially at critical points," he announced.
Alongside this measure, the police will be stepping up civic road education activities in schools, churches and other places with a significant population.
Passenger transport vehicles will also be covered, where the police will check the technical condition of the vehicles and the capacity of passengers during the activities.
