In partnership with the government, the World Bank (WB) is investing around 250 million dollars to implement a project aimed at improving the mobility and accessibility of people in the Greater Maputo metropolitan area.
Entitled "Move Maputo", the project will last two years and will be implemented in phases. In this first phase, work is underway to rehabilitate and widen some of the access roads covered by the project, according to AIM.
"Clarify to the population that the 250 million is not for the construction of roads in Matola or Maputo, but for the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), which is a mass transportation system," said Camilo Macunguele, the engineer responsible for the project at the Matola City Council.
Macunguele was speaking this Tuesday during the "Café da Manhã" program on Rádio Moçambique, the national broadcaster.
The source said that, with the project, more than 124,000 people are expected to be transported every day and also the roads that we are going to rehabilitate now will be able to transport around 95,000 citizens from within their areas. This will prevent people from traveling long distances to catch transport, as has been the case until now.
"The BRT will start operating from downtown Maputo and will extend along Guerra Popular avenues to Praça dos Combatentes, aka Xiquelene, connecting Magoanine to Missão Roque.
However, there are other feeder roads that are going to be attached here, which will work and feed together with the BRT," the source explained.
