Frida Kahlo's self-portrait auctioned for $34.9 million

Frida Kahlo's work "Diego y yo", (Diego and I) has sold for about 34.9 million dollars at a Sotheby's auction in New York to the founder of the Museum of Latin American Art. This is the highest value for a painting by a Latin American artist.

The 30 centimeter high and 22.4 centimeter wide work is a self-portrait of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo that was completed in 1949, a few years before her death. According to news sources, the identity of the buyer and seller is unknown.

It is known that the piece had already changed hands in 1990, also at a Sotheby's auction, where it sold for $1.4 million according to Aljazeera.

The painting portrays a melancholic image of Frida Kahlo With tears streaming down her face, with the figure of her husband, Diego Rivera, on her forehead.

This representation will refer to the unstable marriage that Frida had with Diego and the extramarital relationship that the Mexican painter had with Maria Felix, a Mexican actress who was a close friend of Frida. The artist also had an affair with Frida's sister, Cristina Kahlo.

The old record for the most expensive work by a Latin American artist belonged to Diego Rivera's painting "The rivals", which sold for $9.76 million.

It should be noted that Frida Kahlo died in 1954 at the age of 47 from a pulmonary embolism, but her work, which included paintings with controversial themes and depicting the female experience, made the artist a feminist icon.
