The head of the list for the Renamo party, Venâncio Mondlane, claims to have won the October 11 vote in Mozambique's sixth local elections, with 53% of the votes.

Mondlane was running for mayor of Maputo, the country's capital, and his main opponent was Rasaque Manhique, from the Frelimo party.

Venâncio Mondlane told the press on Thursday that the people had legitimized his candidacy, with Renamo obtaining 53% of the votes. On Friday his party stressed the ratio presented by Mondlane, corresponding to 186,114 votes.

The figures calculated by Renamo, in a parallel count, point to the defeat of Frelimo, which obtained 36% of the votes, equivalent to 125 967.

In third place, the Democratic Movement of Mozambique would have obtained, according to Renamo, 6% of the votes, which corresponds to 22,140 votes.

New Democracy, on the other hand, won only 1% of the votes, or 2,882.

According to the party, this data refers to the processing of 95% polling stations.
