Zambezia province, Mozambique's second most populous, has been the scene of constant attacks and growing insecurity, caused by the Naparama movement. This armed group, which presents itself as a resistance force, has attacked local authorities, members of the ruling Frelimo party and defense and security forces, creating a climate of fear.
Although Governor Pio Matos described a decrease in the number of attacks, violence persists, especially in areas such as Morrumbala, where the barbaric act of beheading a member of the community was recently recorded. This attack was condemned, and the governor expressed indignation at the act, which was "quite shameful for Mozambican society".
Quoted in a RFIPio Matos said that "such acts of violence bring no gain to anyone, they only result in a loss of dignity and respect for human life".
The governor of Zambézia believes that the violence perpetrated by the Naparamas is linked, in part, to demonstrations of discontent with the results of the general elections on October 9, 2024. Community leaders, members of the ruling party and police officers have been targeted by the group.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Pio Matos is optimistic, saying that "conditions are being created so that peace and reconciliation can be restored", emphasizing the importance of Mozambicans uniting in a process of reconciliation and pacification to overcome the challenges posed by insecurity.
Although Zambezia province still faces challenges in relation to the Naparama violence, the local authorities are determined to restore tranquillity and promote a process of reconciliation between the various factions of Mozambican society.
