Angola: Conflict between wings of the UCKG already has "white smoke" and only one leader is recognized

Angola: Conflito entre alas na IURD já tem “fumo branco” e só se reconhece um único líder

The conflict between the Brazilian and Angolan wings of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) has come to an end through an agreement mediated by the Angolan state and which recognizes Alberto Segundo as the leader of the organization in the country.

The information was released in a statement from the UCKG, quoted by Lusa, which made known the "conciliatory decision promoted by the Angolan state." Bishop Alberto Segunda is recognized as the sole leader of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Angola.

The UCKG in Angola has been in conflict for several years, with a bicephalous leadership divided between the reformist, so-called "Angolan" wing, headed by Valente Bizerra Luís, and the "Brazilian" wing of the sect founded by Edir Macedo, currently led by the also Angolan Alberto Segunda, who replaced the Brazilian Honorilton Gonçalves, sentenced to three years' probation.

The IURD statement notes that, taking into account "the conciliatory efforts of the Angolan state and the need to heal some wounds resulting from the riots that took place during the conflict," the organization will now be recognized as the Church of the Kingdom of God in Angola (IRDA).

"The Church in Angola will continue to adopt, in total respect for the law and the conciliatory efforts of the Angolan state, the religious doctrine that is at the root of its creation in Angola," adds the same note, according to which "all the brethren will be welcomed, with respect and dignity, as faithful and members".

The now-named IRDA also calls on its members "to cultivate a spirit of unity" and a relationship that "will speak with one voice" through its leader Bishop Alberto Segunda.

In November 2019, dissidents from the UCKG in Angola accused the Brazilian leadership of financial crimes, racism, discrimination and abuse of authority, among others, and formed a reformist wing, which was recognized by the Angolan government as the legitimate representative of the Brazilian religious movement

As a result, four members of the leadership of the UCKG were made defendants. In March 2022, they were acquitted of most of the charges, with the exception of former leader Honorilton Gonçalves, who was sentenced to three years in prison on a suspended sentence for the crime of physical and psychological violence.
