Mozambican lawyer and social and human rights activist Alice Mabota has died of an illness in South Africa, where she was receiving treatment.

According to MZNews, the 74-year-old had recently been assisted by doctors in Portugal. A fundraiser was also held in Mozambique to help with treatment costs in South Africa.

The Center for Democracy, Development and Human Rights (CDD), which participated in the fundraising for Alice Mabota's treatment, reacted with regret to the activist's death on its Facebook page.

Alice Mabota gained notoriety as President of the Human Rights League and for being one of the voices that most questioned the policies and actions of successive Mozambican governments.
