One month on (25/12/2024) from the massacre that followed the 'alleged' escape of inmates from Maputo Central Prison and "B.O" Maximum Security Prison, the names of those killed by the police are still unknown.
"There are families who still don't know if their relatives are alive or not," according to the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD).
The evasion led to the escape of more than 1,500 prisoners and the death of more than 100. Thirty-four were reportedly killed in the jails and "70 inmates were executed after being recaptured".
Some families found their injured relatives at Maputo Central Hospital. Others went to the hospital's morgue, but there several bodies were still unidentified.
