The South African presidency regrets the expulsion on Friday of its ambassador to the United States of America, after he showed himself to be anti-progressive in the face of US President Donald Trump's policies.
Ebrahim Rassol, who had already been the SA ambassador to the US between 2010 and 2015, during Barack Obama's administration, was considered "Persona non grata" by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to Rubio, Rassol is a politician who incites racism and hates America and President Trump.
The South African presidency believes that a diplomatic settlement between the parties is necessary, with a view to building and maintaining mutually beneficial cooperation.
In South Africa, the largest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), is calling for an urgent dialog between the parties.
Emma Louise Powell Diaz, the DA's national spokesperson for international relations, described the situation as "deeply regrettable".
In this sense, he advocates swift action by the South African government to stabilize relations with one of its biggest trading partners.
"The expulsion of Ambassador Rasool is a significant setback in our diplomatic relations with the United States. We call on the presidency to expedite the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU) delegation in Washington, DC. This delegation should be tasked with negotiating a way forward to restore and stabilize our diplomatic ties," he said.
