South Africa takes over G20 presidency

África do Sul assume presidência do G20

On Tuesday, Brazil handed over the temporary presidency of the G20 to South Africa at the conclusion of the summit of the world's 20 largest economies, with Lula da Silva highlighting the creation of the alliance against hunger.

The transfer of command was announced by Brazilian President Lula da Silva at a short ceremony at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, where he sat next to his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa.

"I wish Cyril Ramaphosa every success in leading the G20. South Africa can count on Brazil to exercise a presidency that goes beyond what we have been able to achieve," said Lula.

According to the Brazilian president, this is not an ordinary transfer, but a significant one, given all the cultural, economic and historical ties that unite Latin America and Africa.

Brazil was already working with South Africa on the succession. The Brazilian authorities thanked Ramaphosa's government for its willingness to follow up on some of Brazil's initiatives, such as holding a social summit before the leaders' meeting and continuing discussions to create a global tax on the super-rich.

South Africa, which will take over the presidency in 2025, will end a cycle in which the 19 countries that make up the G20 have alternated at the helm of the forum.

At the closing session of the G20 Summit of Heads of State and Government, Lula highlighted that "we launched a Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty and started an unprecedented debate on taxing the super-rich. We put climate change on the agenda of finance ministries and central banks and approved the first multilateral document on the bio-economy".

The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty includes 82 countries, as well as the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU).

In addition, nine financial institutions, 24 international organizations and 31 philanthropic and non-governmental entities joined, for a total of 148 founding members.

The members of the G20 are the USA, China, Germany, Russia, the UK, France, Japan, Italy, India, Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Australia, Canada, South Korea, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, as well as the EU and the AU. (Text: Jornal News)
