The deaths recorded in 2025 resulted from 110 accidents, compared to 92 accidents in the same period in 2024.

The data, presented this morning in an interview with Radio MozambiqueThis year, the number of people seriously injured rose by 56, from 74 in 2024 to 130 in 2025, representing +76%. Light injuries rose from 151 last year to 237 this year, corresponding to an increase of 86 injuries (57%).

The authorities also recorded an increase in the number of major material damages, and a reduction in light damage.

The city of Maputo had the highest number of accidents. There were 20 accidents resulting in 20 deaths. In Gaza province there were 19 accidents and 22 deaths; Inhambane had 14 accidents and 16 deaths; Maputo province had 16 accidents and 32 deaths; in Manica there were 11 accidents and seven deaths - the Manica figures do not include the accident that resulted in 23 deaths.

According to Agostinho Amor, the highest number of accidents is due to pedestrians being run over. Taking the data from the two months together, there have been 43 pedestrian accidents and 39 fatalities this year, compared to 35 last year. There were 24 collisions between cars, resulting in 41 deaths. This was followed by crashes, with 25 accidents and 30 deaths. There were nine collisions between cars and motorcycles, resulting in nine deaths. There were four crashes into fixed obstacles and nine fatalities. Crashes between cars and cyclists resulted in four accidents and five deaths. And a collision between motorcycles resulted in one death this year.

The causes of these accidents are disobedience to driving rules: excessive speed (68 accidents); drunk driving (one accident); irregular overtaking (nine accidents); mechanical defects (three accidents); oncoming traffic (five cases); irregular changes of direction (three cases); and irregular junctions (seven cases).

In the authorities' view, responsibility for accidents "is shared by all road safety stakeholders", namely road users "drivers, pedestrians, passengers and [road] managers".

"Everyone doing their part in the best way can improve the road safety situation," said Amor.
