The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday that it will conduct a formal investigation after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 94th annual Oscars. The penalty could lead to suspension or expulsion from the Academy membership.
"The Academy condemns Mr. Smith's actions at last night's ceremony [so] we have initiated a formal review around what occurred and will explore further actions and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law," the document quoted by usmagazine advances.
In 2017, the organization, which has over ten thousand members from all branches of the film industry, introduced a new code of conduct following the #MeToo movement.
The regulations state that there is no place for members who "abuse their status, power or influence in a way that violates standards of decency." The code also notes that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is "categorically opposed to any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination."

According to the Academy's code of conduct, such consequences may entail "suspension from membership or expulsion from membership."
In recent years, violations of this code have led to the expulsion of members such as Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and Roman Polanski over allegations of sexual misconduct.
"LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. The incident involved one individual slapping the other. The individual involved has refused to file a police report," the LAPD said in an official press statement. "If the party involved wishes to make a police report at a later date, the LAPD will be available to complete the investigative report."
