The presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, warned that the fourth phase of peaceful demonstrations would have a major impact on the national economy.
"We are currently entering a painful phase that will profoundly affect the national economy," he said in a recent interview with CNN Portugal.
But demonstrations that began on October 21 have already caused dozens of deaths and injuries. Mondlane told the channel that he will not use violence. He accused the police of inciting violence by the way they acted, as well as carrying out vandalism.
"There are videos to prove it. We have no evidence of any situation where the demonstrators took the initiative to attack the police or destroy public or private property," he said.
He noted that in the cases of clashes between protesters and the police, they were in self-defense due to the excessive use of force by the authorities.
