More than 300 civilians killed by security forces since October 2024

Mais de 300 civis mortos pelas forças de segurança desde Outubro de 2024

The Security Forces killed 362 civilians between October 19, 2024 and March 18, 2025, the most recent case being in the "Casa Branca" area, in the municipality of Matola, Maputo province, according to the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD).

This year the CDD has received 17 reports of deaths, 14 of which have been confirmed.

In fact, the civil society organization says it has received more than 600 reports of deaths due to police violence, with 348 confirmed, between October 19, 2024 and January 15, 2025. Updated figures indicate 617 deaths by March 18, 2025.

"Of these cases, 215 were confirmed through the presentation of death certificates, evidence from funerals and visits to families - especially in Maputo, where the verification process was completed in 90%," reads the Human Rights bulletin published today, which notes that there were serious and light injuries.

The CDD said that these figures reflect the worsening of a post-election crisis after October 9, 2024, the day of the General Elections.

"CDD insists on the need for frank, honest and inclusive dialogue as a way out of the current crisis," the NGO argues.
