The European Union (EU) has injected 200,000 euros, equivalent to 13.8 million meticais, in humanitarian aid for around 1,500 Mozambicans from the Morrumbala district in Zambezia, who have chosen to remain in the Nhamithuthu refugee camp in the Nsanje district of Malawi..
They are Mozambicans who were part of the group of more than 7,000 who fled to neighboring Malawi because of the violence and terror in the aftermath of the elections.
The Mozambican government, through the INGD, mobilized resources and last week finished the process of repatriating 6,382 of the 7,904 people displaced to Malawi. The remaining group are being treated not as refugees but as asylum seekers.
According to a Radio MozambiqueThe fund disbursed by the European Union has been entrusted to the Malawi Red Cross, which will provide a variety of humanitarian support to Mozambicans displaced here over a period of six months, or until August of this year.
"The funding is part of this political and economic bloc's contribution to the Emergency Disaster Response Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies," the EU said in a statement.
The European Union has signed a 14 million euro humanitarian contribution agreement with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Society to support emergency and disaster response funds.
