The Inhambane Provincial Anti-Corruption Office is accusing four employees of the Vilankulo municipality of crimes of maladministration and embezzlement for sabotaging the tax collection computer system and embezzling the municipality's equipment (laptops) in May last year.
The individuals, in the course of their duties, requested the services of two IT technicians to set up the municipal tax payment system, causing damage to the value of almost 26.1 million meticais due to the failure to collect municipal taxes on time during 2024, in addition to the sums spent on resetting the system.
According to a note quoted by NewsDuring the investigations in question, it was found that four laptops and their accessories had been stolen by former employees, three of which were recovered and returned to the municipality, causing damage worth an estimated 60,000 meticais.
In view of the damage, the defendants will be held criminally responsible and will have to make good the damage, while the four co-defendants will be released under a term of identity and residence, and the case will be sent for trial to the Vilankulo district court.
