PODEMOS demands explanations from PGR on attack on Venâncio Mondlane

PODEMOS exige explicações da PGR sobre atentado contra Venâncio Mondlane

The Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS), through Hélder Mendonça, a member of the Political Council of the now second largest political grouping in the country, is challenging the Attorney General's Office (PGR) to provide explanations about the attack on Venâncio Mondlane that took place this Wednesday in the city of Maputo..

According to a Evidence newspaperThe Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM), through the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR), fired on Venâncio Mondlane's caravan, fatally shooting two children and wounding 16 people.

At the moment, according to his support office, Mondlane is in an uncertain location and his medical condition is unknown.

For Hélder Mendonça, a member of the Political Council of PODEMOS, "what happened is unacceptable because this is a citizen who is involved in politics in Mozambique," and he argues that the PGR should provide a clear explanation of the attack.

"I don't have any concrete information. If it's true, the government must make a massive effort to identify the material actors above all, because that's the only way we can get to the moral authors. If there has been an attack on any Mozambican citizen, especially one who is involved in Mozambican politics, there needs to be an investigation. It is unacceptable for this citizen to suffer an attack in the middle of a public square, as is assumed to have happened. I think the PGR should provide a clear explanation of this possible attack," said Hélder Mendonça.

Regarding the Political Commitment for a National and Inclusive Dialogue, the member of the Political Council of the second most represented party in Parliament highlighted the pioneering initiatives. However, he stressed that the most important thing at the moment is what is to be achieved and, above all, the commitment made and accepted by the state.
