Cabo Delgado: More than 100 schools remain closed due to terrorism

Cabo Delgado: Mais de 100 escolas continuam fechadas devido ao terrorismo

At least 105 schools remain closed in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique, due to the insecurity caused by terrorism. The information was revealed this Monday by the provincial director of Education in Cabo Delgado, Evandro Quicardente, who pointed out that of the 1,012 schools, 907 have already resumed activities.

"Of the 1,012 schools that Cabo Delgado province has, 907 are actually in operation at the moment, which means that 105 schools remain closed due to terrorism. Last year, we only had 867 schools in operation. This means that we have managed to reopen more than 40 schools in the districts affected by terrorism," said the official quoted by the portal Zumbo FM News.

According to the source, Macomia is the district with the highest number of schools still closed (35), followed by Mocímboa da Praia (24), Nangade (8) and Palma (6). However, according to Quicardente, in the districts of Palma, Mocímboa da Praia, Macomia, Nangade, Muidumbe and Quissanga, some schools are back in operation after improvements in security.

He guaranteed that educational institutions are only reopened after the authorities have made an assessment. "No school reopens without prior consultation with the defense forces to ensure security in the region," he said.
