Venâncio Mondlane defines March 18 as the new day of Mozambican heroes

Venâncio Mondlane define 18 de Março como novo dia dos heróis moçambicanos

Venâncio Mondlane, the former presidential candidate who is leading the biggest challenge to the election results in Mozambique since the country's first elections, considers March 18 to be the new Mozambican heroes' day, since it was on this day in 2023 that the great movement for the new Republic began.

For Venâncio Mondlane, who was speaking yesterday, Sunday (02), from his Facebook account, March 18 is the new day of Mozambican heroes, because it was on this date in 2023 that police officers, claiming to be following orders from their superiors, dispersed with rubber bullets and tear gas groups of young people who wanted to hold peaceful marches, announced to the municipal authorities, in various parts of the country, in homage to the rapper Azagaia, who died of illness a week earlier, causing consternation to thousands of fans.

"We have set March 18 as the new day of Mozambican heroes, because it was on this day in 2023 that the great movement for the new Republic began. That's where it all began and then came the demonstrations that took place at the level of the local elections and now the demonstrations at the level of the general elections," said Mondlane.

Meanwhile, the former presidential candidate and self-proclaimed President of the people has drawn up a new list of national heroes. The new list includes Mozambique's first president, Samora Machel, Frelimo founder Eduardo Mondlane, Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, musician Azagaia, Elvino Dias, Paulo Guambe, Jeremias Nguenha, Gilles Cistac, Mano Shottas, Siba Siba Macuacua, Carlos Cardoso, Lurdes Mutola and Alice Mabota.

"These are the national heroes who are the result of a poll and popular consultation of the Mozambican people," said Venâncio Mondlane.

Mozambique is celebrating Mozambican Heroes Day today, an event that also marks the 56th anniversary of the death of Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane, the architect of the
National Unity.
