Prisoner evasion: No results yet from the investigation

Evasão de reclusos: Ainda não há resultados do inquérito

More than a month has passed since the "escape" of inmates from the Machava penitentiaries, namely the Central Prison and the Maximum Security Prison "B.O", and the country still doesn't know the results of the investigation that the government announced on December 29, 2024, four days after the inmates escaped.

On December 25, 2024, more than 1,500 inmates broke out of those prisons. Some 34 were killed in the raid, according to a civil society organization. "In total, 104 people lost their lives, victims of crossfire and close-range executions."

The government had guaranteed that an investigation team would be set up to look into the case, but since then, according to the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD), "neither the terms of reference of the commission nor its members have been known".

"The escape resulted in the destruction of significant parts of the Central Prison, including systems that stored sensitive information about prisoners. This incident raised serious doubts and fueled speculation about the possibility of a facilitated escape, with clear objectives of allowing the release of certain groups of prisoners. The prisoners were being held in controlled areas of the OR," reads a bulletin from the organization.

The CDD defends the publication of the constitution of the commission of inquiry supposedly set up to investigate the case.
