More than 240 houses have been partially destroyed in the Maquival administrative post, in the Quelimane district of Zambezia, following the effects of tropical storm Elvis.
The administrator of Quelimane, Amostra Sobrinho, pointed to the villages of Ionge and Mugogoda as the worst hit by the rain that has been falling since Tuesday.
"These rains have had an impact on the main area of agriculture in the administrative post of Maquival, because the agricultural fields are all flooded. We also have the interruption of the road that connects Quelimane to Madal via the Marrabo road," said the official, quoted by the newspaper Radio Mozambique.
The central and northern regions of the country, namely the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Nampula, Zambézia and Tete, continue to experience weak to moderate rainfall as a result of another low-pressure system that has been influencing the weather since the beginning of the week.
According to the National Meteorological Institute (INAM), tropical storm Elvis has formed in the Mozambique Channel and is now moving towards the sub-tropical regions.
