Politician Venâncio Mondlane says he has been to many parts of the world since October 21, 2024, when he crossed the first border out of the country. In total, there have been eight countries, including Africa, Europe and Middle East.
He recalled that he was forced to leave Mozambique after he suffered an alleged assassination attempt on that date. This happened during a press conference in the center of the Mozambican Women's Organization Square, Av. Vladimir Lénine, Coop neighbourhood, Maputo city. Amid riots, the police fired tear gas at Mondlane. Some people were hit by tear gas capsules.
"That day there were also several snipers set up at various points. I had inside information, even from the security services, that I should leave the country as soon as possible," he said in an interview with Miramar. This happened two days after the assassination of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, close to where Mondlane was attempted assassinated, on Joaquim Chissano Avenue.
He said that on the night of October 21, he crossed the border from Ressano Garcia into South Africa. He stayed in a hotel in the city of Nelspruit for a day.
The next day, he went to Kruger International Airport in Mpumalanga province. He flew to Johannesburg and stayed in a condominium in the township of Sandton, Gauteng province. Still in Sandton, he went to another condominium where, according to him, he was attacked.
"At the time I was cooperating with the Southern African Human Rights Network, whose president is Professor [Adriano] Nuvunga. But due to the attacks I was suffering, in a chaotic way, I had to find other independent ways to guarantee my own safety," he said.
Once again forced to leave the second condominium, Mondlane took refuge in another space, which he declined to reveal.
"I may still need that space, where I stayed for almost a week and a half," he warned.
The manhunt did not stop. Once again, due to persecution, he left the area and flew to Germany, to the city of Düsseldorf. He stayed there for almost two weeks.
Mondlane also revealed that he then went to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. He then went to Oman, a country in the Middle East. He crossed the border to Abu Dabi.
"After that, I went back to Africa. I passed through Nigeria and another country that I can't reveal. I was asked to keep a low profile," he said, adding that it was there that "I ended up incubating malaria".
On that journey, he returned to the Middle East, to Qatar, where he was diagnosed with malaria - one of the most serious. "It's a type of malaria that, if you don't have assistance, in 48 hours you lose your life." Mondlane said he was hospitalized for two days. "It was the two days when people were waiting for the announcement [of the stage] Turbo V8".
"After Qatar, I came straight to Mozambique," he said.
