MDM defends "urgent" revision of the Constitution of the Republic

MDM defende “urgência” na revisão da Constituição da República

The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) argued yesterday that there should be "urgency" in the constitutional revision process, in order to accommodate a governance model that allows for greater inclusion and independence of sovereign bodies.

In a publication by DWMDM spokesman Ismael Nhacucué stressed that it was "important and urgent to carry out the constitutional review".

"The constitutional review will ensure that we accommodate a governance model that allows for greater inclusion, independence of the sovereign bodies and, more than that, greater interrelationship between the various powers. And, from there, to revise the electoral law to create an election model that allows us to mitigate fraud," Nhacucué explained.

The spokesman's position comes after the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, announced on Monday that there was a consensus on terms of reference to discuss state reforms after a meeting with the leaders of Renamo, PODEMOS, Nova Democracia (ND) and MDM.

Among the planned reforms are changes to the electoral law and the Constitution of the Republic.
