On Monday, the Port of Maputo began the first phase of work to expand its container terminal, an investment of 164 million dollars. The work is expected to be completed within two years.
The project includes expanding the container storage yard to 6.48 hectares; building an additional 400 meters of quay - bringing the total to 650 meters - and deepening the draft from 12 meters to 16 meters. This will make it possible to accommodate ships 366 meters long.
In addition, 700 refrigerated container bins will be installed to boost exports.
Around 23,000 pupils could start the school year sitting on the floor and out in the open in Nampula province, as school infrastructures and furniture have been destroyed in vandalizations.
In that part of the country 130 classrooms in 64 schools were destroyed, school equipment (desks, blackboards, computers) and electrical equipment were stolen.
The spokesman for the education sector in the province, Faruk Carim, pointed out that this will increase the pupil/teacher ratio in several schools, especially in the city of Nampula, which is 90 pupils per class, putting the sector in a tight situation.
At the moment, data is being collected for the possible restoration of part of the destroyed infrastructure by the start of the school year.
He said that, due to a lack of suitable conditions, the school administrations affected had adopted mobile offices to ensure that all the pupils were enrolled.
In this context, he called on students to go to the schools where they were studying in order to register, assuring them that classes will not stop, even without infrastructure.
Carim added that the sector in Nampula still doesn't have a plan for rebuilding the destroyed classrooms, as it is still surveying the damage. For the interviewee, the community in general should be aware that the school belongs to the people and that its destruction/vandalization has a negative impact on children's education, as they are deprived of continuing their studies and, as a result, their future is compromised (Notícias).
