Mozambique Airlines (LAM) paid more than 70 million meticais to rent a cargo aircraft that never worked. The aircraft was not certified to fly in national airspace.
"LAM - Mozambique Airlines - announces that the Boeing B737-300 aircraft, acquired for dedicated cargo transportation, has been returned to its origin, due to the fact that it was not certified in the national territory," the airline said in a press release.
For its part, the Civil Aviation Institute of Mozambique (IACM) explained that the Boeing B737-300 did not meet the requirements for certification because the manufacturer did not consider the changes made to the aircraft.
Information that MZNews has had access to indicates that LAM was paying around 93,000 dollars a month to rent the aircraft, around five million reais at the current exchange rate.
After calculating the time the aircraft was parked at Maputo International Airport (12 months), LAM paid the owner one million dollars, around 71 million meticais.
It's yet another failed investment by a highly indebted company which, it seems, has tried at all costs to shake off the crisis with inefficient measures.
