Last year, 204 more people became billionaires worldwide, bringing the total of tycoons to 2,769, according to an Oxfam report.
The growth rate of billionaires in 2024 was three times higher than the previous year. Together, the fortunes of billionaires total 15 trillion dollars.
The growth was two trillion in just 12 months, representing the second largest annual increase since records began.
The report "At whose expense? - The origin of wealth and the construction of injustice in colonialism" points out that if the growth trend continues, the world could see not just the first trillionaire, as previously predicted, but a multiplication of that number, with up to five trillionaires emerging in the next decade.
On the other hand, the number of poor people continues to rise, with data from the World Bank indicating little change since 1990.
This contrast, according to Oxfam, reveals the growing disparity between the richest and the poorest, especially in the context of the global North and South. In 2023, the richest 1% in the countries of the North took 30 million dollars an hour from the countries of the Global South.
The report reveals that the countries of the Global North continue to control most of the world's wealth.
