The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) predicts the occurrence of another tropical cyclone in the current rainy and cyclonic season, which runs from November to April next year, bringing the total to two after the passage of ˝Chido˝, which hit the northern coast of the country last week.
Seasonal forecast data for the 2024/2025 rainy season shows that 12 storms will form in the Indian Ocean during the period in question, five of which could reach the tropical cyclone stage, one of which has already hit the Mozambique channel.
In a NewsThe director-general of INAM, Adérito Aramugi, pointed out that in addition to the cyclone that hit Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces, aggravating the needs of people in the north of the country, another extreme weather event could happen in the coming months.
"Almost everyone already knows that we are vulnerable to cyclones that form in the southwest of the ocean and make their way west of the Mozambique Channel. During this trajectory, we monitor and forecast their impact and we are on alert for the occurrence of yet another probable phenomenon," said Aramugi.
The source also said that, in terms of magnitude, ˝Chido˝ resembles Cyclone Idai, which was felt in category four, with winds of over 195 kilometers per hour and gusts of 230, enough force and energy to leave trails of destruction, as happened in the city of Pemba, Mecúfi district, among other regions in the provinces of Cabo Delgado and part of Nampula.
