The death toll from Cyclone Chido in Mozambique has risen to 120

Subiu para 120 o número de mortes pelo ciclone Chido em Moçambique

Cyclone Chido killed at least 120 people in Mozambique during its deadly passage through the Indian Ocean last week, Mozambique's National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD) said on Monday (23), raising the previous death toll to 94.

The cyclone, which devastated the French island territory of Mayotte before hitting the African continent, also destroyed 110,000 homes in Mozambique, according to the authorities.

This phenomenon is taking place at a time when Mozambique is suffering from a deadly post-election crisis.

According to AFPAfter reaching the coast, the storm hit the province of Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, with gusts of around 260 kilometers per hour and 250 millimeters of rain in one day.

This part of northern Mozambique is regularly battered by tropical storms and has been fighting unrest caused by an Islamist insurgency since 2017.

More than 500,000 of the 620,000 Mozambicans affected by the storm - which experts say has become more intense due to man-made climate change - are concentrated in Cabo Delgado.

In the hard-hit Mecufi district, a mosque's roof was destroyed by the gale, as can be seen in the images taken by UNICEF.
