Nampula: Protesters destroy infrastructure in repudiation of Constitutional Council decision

Nampula: Manifestantes destroem infra-estruturas em repúdio à decisão do Conselho Constitucional

The province of Nampula, in northern Mozambique, saw riots in some regions yesterday afternoon (23), following the announcement and proclamation of the election results by the Constitutional Council (CC), which gave victory to Frelimo and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo.

Nampula is the largest constituency in the country, having elected 48 deputies to the Assembly of the Republic. Frelimo, in power, will have 27 deputies, and won the election for provincial governor.

However, according to a VOAThe demonstrators, who claim that the CC's decision "was not fair because it did not respect the will of the people expressed in the vote", began destroying public and private infrastructure and vehicles, and setting up barricades on public roads, mainly in the provincial capital.

Some power poles were knocked down, resulting in power cuts in some neighborhoods of the city. In the populous Namicopo neighborhood, protesters set fire to the police station.

In addition to the provincial capital, it was reported that demonstrators destroyed the leader's house in the administrative post of Namialo, in the Meconta district.

Meconta's administrator, who did not confirm the incident, said it was too early to provide any information.
