Cyclone Chido: EU grants 59.1 million meticais in emergency aid to Mozambique

Ciclone Chido: UE concede ajuda de emergência de 59,1 milhões de meticais a Moçambique

The European Union (EU) will provide 900,000 euros, equivalent to 59.1 million meticais, to help Mozambique, which was hit by Cyclone Chido last weekend.

According to a spokeswoman for the European Commission, quoted by VOA, five flights under a humanitarian air bridge will supply Mozambique with 60 tons of emergency aid, including shelter material.

The latest death toll in the country is 75, up from 73 the previous day, according to the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD). Mozambique was the country most affected on the African continent by the storm. The president decreed two days of national mourning from yesterday, Friday.

Cyclone Chido hit Mozambique at a time when the political situation in the country is very tense, following the October 9 elections. The opposition is contesting the ruling party's announced victory and the electoral crisis has already left at least 130 people dead. The results of these elections must be approved by the Constitutional Council by Monday.
