This morning (11.12) angry demonstrators stormed the IIe district jail in Zambezia province and freed inmates. State institutions were destroyed and the headquarters of the Frelimo party set on fire.
"We are living in complete chaos. People are out of control and the authorities have completely lost control of the situation," said a resident of Errego, the district's main town, as quoted by Radio Chuabo FM.
The protests, which are aimed at challenging the government and socio-economic conditions, and the election results of October 9, have so far resulted in hundreds of confirmed deaths, including civilians and police, according to civil society figures.
The demonstrations, called by the presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the PODEMOS party, have reached new heights in recent days with the invasion of jails, the destruction of Frelimo party institutions and the release of prisoners.
