Manica: Protesters vandalize Chimanimani National Reserve

Manica: Manifestantes vandalizam Reserva Nacional de Chimanimani

On Monday 9, dozens of people invaded and destroyed camps in the Chimanimani National Reserve, in Manica province, allegedly because they were not benefiting from gold mining. They say that the elites linked to power are the ones who benefit most from the riches.

Among the beneficiaries were people from the nuclear family of the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi. One of his sons is said to be the figure at the forefront of the restricted benefits.

Information in our possession indicates that, on the other hand, the invading group wanted to release two miners who had been detained in the park for around two days.

Sources shared with MZNews image of property reduced to ashes and others vandalized as a result of the rioters' invasion.

The administrator of the Sussundenga district, Tomás Razão, explained that the rebellion of the prospectors was caused by the actions of park inspectors, and the authorities are now investigating whether there were any excesses.

Sociologist Abílio Mandlate says that the model of exploitation of natural resources in Mozambique is not inclusive, which generates dissatisfaction with the resources extracted from their land.

The demonstrations are taking place all over the country in protest at the election results that gave victory to Frelimo and its candidate, Daniel Chapo, but the people are also complaining about the lack of job opportunities and social inequalities in a country that is extremely rich in natural resources.
