Today in Maputo province, the Deputy Minister of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) begged teachers for more patience until the government pays teachers' overtime.
Cited by Radio Mozambique In the context of the start of the final exams for the 10th and 12th grades, Manuel Bazo assured that a "complex" process is underway to determine who has or hasn't received the money.
"I'd say it's a rather complex process that involves checking overtime. Once this has been done, payment is made. This payment is centralized, and the amount goes directly to the teachers' accounts. There are maps and matrices. We are cross-referencing the teachers who have already been paid in 2022 and those who have not been paid in 2023. The decision taken was to complete the 2022 payment and start the 2023 payment, and so on and so forth," he said.
However, he said there was no date set for the payments to be completed.
"The government is making an effort to pay overtime. We can't talk about deadlines because there are some elements that need to come together before I can respond. At the moment I don't have any information to talk about deadlines. But I can assure you that the government will pay the overtime," he said.
This Monday, all over the country, teachers in some schools are not giving students their final exams for the 10th and 12th grades. This is due to the lack of overtime pay since 2022 "the springboard for the demonstrations" and various watertight and deplorable administrative conditions, such as the lack of career progression and overcrowded classes.
