Karingani Game Reserve has strengthened its collaboration with Gorongosa National Park (PNG) in a series of initiatives aimed at conserving large predators in Mozambique and the region.
As part of its ongoing commitment to the conservation of endangered species, Karingani Game Reserve recently donated a breeding pair of leopards to PNG. The operation to capture and translocate these cats was coordinated by the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance's (MWA) veterinary and logistics team.
The leopards were transported from Massingir, in Gaza Province, to PNG, where they have already begun to adapt to their new environment and were recently released into the wider park area, after having spent just over a month in quarantine. This is an important step towards strengthening the carnivore population in the park and promoting the ecological balance of the region.
In addition to leopards, Karingani Game Reserve stands out for its contribution to the preservation of other carnivore species. With a robust population of wild dogs and spotted hyenas, Karingani and the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance this week carried out the translocation of three spotted hyenas to Gorongosa National Park. This initiative, part of the ongoing collaboration strategy between Karingani, the MWA and Mozambique's National Parks, under the guidance of the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), underlines the commitment to restoring ecological balance and strengthening biodiversity in protected areas.
"Our partnership with Gorongosa, the donation of a breeding pair of leopards to Zinave National Park in 2022 and the translocation of six wild dogs to Malawi's Majete National Park in 2021 are clear examples of how strategic collaborations can boost conservation on a large scale, contributing at both national and regional levels," said Mateus Mutemba, Executive Director of Karingani Game Reserve.
“Through these initiatives, we are strengthening the Karingani's role in preserving biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for large carnivores in Mozambique, in line with the objectives set by ANAC regarding the repopulation of conservation areas.“.
These initiatives highlight the central role of Karingani Game Reserve in the national and regional conservation landscape, reaffirming the importance of long-term collaborations between private reserves and publicly owned conservation areas.
