South Africa threatens to close the Ressano Garcia border again

África do Sul ameaça fechar novamente a fronteira de Ressano Garcia

The Republic of South Africa is considering once again closing the Lebombos border crossing with Mozambique at Ressano Garcia, in the Moamba district of Maputo province.

The alert comes after popular vandalizations last week forced the border to be closed.

The South African Border Management Authority (MBA) maintains that this is a possibility due to indications of new security threats.

The agency's director, Mike Masiapato, assures that the border will remain open as long as the situation of social unrest is under control.

A statement from the MBA quoted by Rádio Moçambique indicates that everything is being done to decongest the long queues of vehicles transporting minerals to the port of Maputo.

"If there are new threats, unfortunately we'll have to close again, because that's the reality we'll have to deal with," he said, quoted by the radio station.

The Ressano Garcia border is the longest link between Mozambique and South Africa.
