The Mozambican military or the intervention police could carry out a coup d'état as part of the ongoing demonstrations in Mozambique, according to Fernando Jorge Cardoso.
These armed groups could come to the conclusion of "asking Mr. Nyusi to step down, take power and announce whatever they want to announce," predicts the Portuguese expert on African affairs,
Cardoso said, in an interview with RTP, that from his point of view there are still two other exit scenarios for the socio-political crisis in the country.
"Nyusi may have those who advise him to make a declaration of withdrawal and hand over power to those who should hand it over, in this case the parliament, which will be able to convene the parties to form a government of national unity. Or he could declare that these elections are not valid. The third possibility is that none of this happens and mass movements break out, in cities, for a long time on the streets, and vandalizations," he said.
The university professor also considered the presence of presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane at the march on Maputo this Thursday to be risky.
"The physical disappearance of Venâncio Mondlane would mean that the inorganic movement would lose its leader. It would be better sense for Venâncio Mondlane to make that clear. The death squads, which have been in Maputo for around 12 years, have already shown that they have no difficulty in eliminating obstacles that stand in their way," he noted.
