A plainclothes officer from the Police of the Republic of Mozambique was killed by people on Monday afternoon in the neighborhood of Malhampsene, in the municipality of Matola, Maputo province.
A witness quoted by "O País" said that they were people from SERNIC.
While he was still alive, the officer allegedly tried to repel a peaceful demonstration. He shot and killed a young man. The demonstrators threw stones at the officer. He fired into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd. The crowd continued to throw stones. Meanwhile, the officer's gun ran out of ammunition. He took refuge in a fuel pump toilet. The crowd didn't stop throwing stones. The officer came out of the bathroom and the crowd stoned him to death.
The PRM confirms the officer's death and says that he was assigned to the PRM's 9th Police Station.
"At the moment, work is being done to ascertain the veracity of the facts about what happened to the PRM member," said Carmínia Leite, PRM spokesperson in Maputo province.
