Three civil society organizations have filed an injunction against the country's three mobile phone operators for the unblocking of intentionally limited internet services.
"This measure aims to immediately restore internet access throughout the country, in response to the restrictions imposed since October 24, 2024, which seriously compromise the fundamental rights of Mozambican citizens," reads the joint statement issued by the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD), the Center for Public Integrity (CIP) and the Civil Society Learning and Training Center (CESC).
The document to which we had access states that access to information is a constitutional right; internet restrictions occur in a critical post-election period and suggest "political motivations that seek to prevent the full exercise of citizens' rights of expression, communication and demonstration"; it negatively affects people's lives and limits access to truthful information.
Before the court, the CDD, CIP and CESC requested: the immediate and continuous re-establishment of internet access by the operators, who must refrain from any blockages that limit this essential right; and o The urgent granting of injunctive relief, on a summary basis, to ensure that citizens' constitutional rights are preserved and that Mozambique does not backtrack on its commitment to the democratic rule of law.
But they also called on the international community and Mozambique's partners to observe this situation carefully and demand respect for democratic principles and freedom of expression in the country.
