Two people lost their lives following the explosion of an artisanal mine allegedly installed by insurgents along the road between the Chinda-Mbau areas, in the district of Mocimboa da Praia, in the northern region of Cabo Delgado province..

The information was provided this Friday (01), by the Coordinator of the Northern Operational Theater, in Cabo Delgado, announced Voz de América (VOA).

According to the security authorities, in addition to the loss of human lives, the incident also caused the total destruction of a passenger car, which was heading towards the district seat of Mocimboa da Praia, last Thursday morning (31).

The defense and security authorities believe that this is a new "modus operandi" of the terrorist group, which in recent days has suffered significant casualties in armed clashes with Mozambican and Rwandan forces.

Mocimboa da Praia has been the epicenter of terrorism in Cabo Delgado. Since 2017, the province has been the target of terrorist attacks that have led to the deaths of more than a thousand civilians and a million internally displaced people.

The persistent instability in Cabo Delgado is one of the factors that has contributed to worsening food insecurity in Mozambique, according to a report by the United Nations agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
