The police of the Republic of Mozambique fired bullets and tear gas to disperse supporters of Venâncio Mondlane this morning in the city of Nampula.
One person has been seriously shot. Several people were injured. The condition of the other victims is still unknown. Images in our possession show a bloodied victim being helped. It is not known whether the bullets were rubber or not.
The candidate for President of the Republic, and self-proclaimed winner of the October 9 elections, is in the northern capital, and this morning gathered hundreds of people in the city's main square, Praça da Liberdade.
At least one Rapid Intervention Unit armored car and another Mahindra-type car were seen at the scene.
At the sound of the first shots, the candidate, who was among the crowd of supporters, was rushed by his security guards to his car. Even so, he remained at the scene. The police withdrew. The march continues.
This week, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) issued a statement announcing that it had summoned Venâncio Mondlane to appear in court for the second time. He criticized his disrespect for justice and for making speeches that could lead to social upheaval.
In another statement, the PGR criticized political actors who lack ethics and proclaim themselves winners of the presidential elections. He noted that irregularities that do not constitute electoral offenses are punishable by two to eight years in prison, "if another [more serious penalty] does not apply".
