Niassa: People and police fight over ballot boxes in Mecanhelas

Niassa: Populares e polícia disputam urnas de voto em Mecanhelas

The town of Insaca, the seat of the Mecanhelas district in Niassa province, experienced turbulent times in the early hours of Thursday morning (10) as a result of a confrontation involving the Mozambique Republic Police (PRM) and an alleged group of young voters.

According to the portal IkweliThe dispute is over the transportation of ballot boxes, including teams of polling station staff, to the district's Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE).

"There was a lot of shooting in one of the elementary school, all because of the people's insistence on seeing the vote count," said a source at the scene, quoted by the portal.

Meanwhile, the head of Public Relations at the district command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Mecanhelas, Celestino Ziade, confirmed the fact, saying that "there are no casualties, but there may be, because it's a preliminary assessment".

Ziade called on the population to remain calm, "because the results are still at the partial evaluation stage and only then will we have general results".
