Mozambique's largest political grouping, Frelimo, is the most prone to conflict during election campaigns.
This observation was made today in Maputo by the Coordinator of the Mais Integridade Electoral Consortium, as part of the aftermath of the main events in the first week of the electoral campaigns.
"It is always Frelimo that is in conflict with the other parties. Firstly, it's due to Frelimo's coverage capacity. It has the largest number of militants involved in the campaign. So it will always be in conflict, in some places where the caravans cross paths," noted Augusta Almeida.
In the first week, 14 cases of intimidation were recorded in five districts in five provinces of the country, namely Chókwè (Gaza), Morrumbene (Inhambane), Maríngue (Sofala), Angónia (Tete) and Cuamba, in Niassa.
"In these districts, we recorded clashes between Frelimo and Renamo sympathizers that did not reach major proportions thanks to the prompt intervention of the PRM," he said.
However, the consortium considers that, overall, the period in question was peaceful, as far as intimidation and electoral violence were concerned, "without major incidents".
