Chapo's wife promises Inhambane voters mechanized agriculture and industrial fishing

Esposa de Chapo promete uma agricultura mecanizada e pesca industrial ao eleitorado de Inhambane

The wife of Frelimo's secretary-general and candidate for the presidency of the Republic, Gueta Chapo, has pledged to mobilize businesspeople to help boost the economy of the Govuro district, in Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, which currently has low incomes despite its enormous potential in agricultural and fishing activities..

The Govuro district is considered a benchmark in promoting the well-being of families through agricultural production and the sustainable exploitation of natural resources.

For this reason, Daniel Chapo's wife, quoted by the AIMThis Tuesday (27), during an election campaign rally, he pledged to continue working for local economic development, promoting accelerated economic growth based on increased production and productivity and the sustainable exploitation of the district's potential.

Gueta Chapo, who could be the future First Lady of the Republic if her husband wins the presidential election on October 9, also intends to focus on local economic development, namely agricultural production and productivity, cattle and goats, fishing, salt extraction and ecotourism, as well as guaranteeing access to basic infrastructure and services for families in the district.

The source also stressed the importance of Mozambique cooperating with other countries to develop the local economy.

The concern of the wife of FRELIMO's presidential candidate comes at a time when there is a persistent lack of formal employment for young people, and difficult access to health, education, water, and the prevalence of difficulties in rehabilitating roads and access routes.

The lack of incentives in the agriculture and fisheries sector, the absence of programs to distribute uniforms and school lunches, and support for local culture, are some of the major challenges presented during a meeting with community and religious leaders and members of the Frelimo party's district secretariat.

Despite the agricultural and fishing potential, residents complained that these areas had been relegated to oblivion.

"Govuro district has enormous potential in the area of agriculture, and has a large irrigated area, but we feel that it is not being exploited as it should be. There is a need to bring in investors with the capacity to respond to this challenge, because the population needs to feel that they have an irrigation system that benefits them," said a young local resident.

He added that "in the fishing sector we also feel there is a need to bring in some partners, because now fishermen resort to traditional fishing".

"As time goes by, the tendency is for the fish to stay on the high seas. So we need to invest a bit more in boats that can respond to the current scenario in the fishing sector," he said.

With regard to these concerns, Gueta Chapo guaranteed to mobilize entrepreneurs linked to the sector to mechanize agricultural and fishing activities, with a view to marketing Govuro's products on national and international markets.
