Kidnappings: Minister Ronda "unfortunate" to dismiss "emotional" complaint from Islamic community

Raptos: Ministro Ronda “foi infeliz” ao desvalorizar denúncia “emocionada” da comunidade islâmica

The Islamic community is accusing some "high-ranking" members of the government of colluding with kidnapping syndicates in the country. Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda challenged the community to provide proof, and called the accusation "emotional".

Reacting to Ronda's reading and proposals, the former president of the Mozambique Bar Association (OAM), Gilberto Coreia, believes that the minister "was unfortunate". He believes that Ronda should accept the complaint and launch a serious investigation.

"[These were, for me,] very unfortunate statements. From a politician who is responsible for investigating crimes, especially serious crimes," he said, noting that "in some way he is also devaluing something that should be taken very seriously".

According to Korea, it's not up to the citizen to present evidence, as Minister Ronda suggests, but rather his perception of the phenomena. Therefore, for the former president, the right thing for the minister to do would be to appreciate the concerns of the Islamic community and make efforts to clarify the problems.

"But you know that there are people who have this evidence. But they're afraid because they don't trust the police he runs," he said, quoted by STV.

According to Korea, the ultimate fight against kidnapping crimes will only be possible if the political will is there.

"There were situations in which it was possible to contribute with technologies from outside, to ask for international cooperation. It was felt that the government didn't want to, didn't make it easy, because there are still internal conflicts. This can lead to discoveries that call into question an entire political power. First of all, the political power has to decide once and for all that combating kidnappings, with all the means at its disposal, is a priority for the Mozambican state," he said.
