"The fight against organized crime depends on recovering assets" - Beatriz Buchili

“A luta contra o crime organizado depende da recuperação de activos” – Beatriz Buchili

The Attorney General of the Republic, Beatriz Buchili, declared last Friday (21) that success in the fight against organized crime depends on the recovery of assets held by criminals.

The attorney general was speaking in Maputo at the end of a meeting of the three specialized bodies under her office - the Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC), the Central Office for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT) and the Central Office for Asset Recovery (GCRA).

"We have come to the end of our two-day meeting, we have evaluated the activities of the GCCCOT and we have concluded that we are on the right track," said Buchili, quoted by the AIM.

However, the source stressed that the fight against organized crime can only be effective with the recovery of assets. In addition, the work of the GCCCT has to be constantly updated in order to meet current challenges.

"We recognize the progress made and have identified the challenges to be overcome," she said, stressing that these include, in particular, "the implementation of integrated strategies and a greater commitment from all sectors to support the GCCCOT."

In addition, Beatriz Buchili recommended that the GCCC, which is marking its 20th anniversary this year, draw up a strategic plan, considering it to be a fundamental instrument for guiding institutional progress.
