On Friday, March 1, the government, through the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands signed an agreement in Maputo to co-finance the second phase of the 33.9 million euro project to rehabilitate the drainage system in the city of Beira, Sofala province.

According to the government, the project is part of a package to respond to short- and long-term needs following the passage of cyclones Idai and Kenneth, which hit the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Zambézia and Cabo Delgado in 2019.

On that occasion, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, quoted by the Radio MozambiqueHe stressed that the project will strengthen the city's climate resilience and help to substantially improve the population's quality of life.

"This vital commitment is not just a response to the challenges of the cyclone, but a bold leap towards building a resilient Beira, a collective commitment to the well-being of the population," concluded Carlos Mesquita.

The ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Mozambique, Elsbeth Akkerman, said that "the rehabilitation work on the drainage and coastal protection system will give the city of Beira greater resilience against flooding caused by rain and sea water".

On the occasion, the mayor of Beira, Albano Carige, said that the work would consist of rehabilitating and lining the drainage system, culminating in the construction of a second rainwater retention basin and a drainage ditch covering an area of around 12 kilometers.
