Attorney general wants "greater control" of pre-trial detention periods

Procuradora-geral quer “maior controlo” dos prazos de prisão preventiva

The Attorney General of the Republic, Beatriz Buchili, calls for greater control of pre-trial detention periods and overcrowding in the country's prisons, which have 160 establishments with prisoners over capacity.

"In the name of controlling legality, we must reinforce our actions in monitoring the execution of sentences, greater control of pre-trial detention periods, overcrowding and guaranteeing respect for human rights," said Beatriz Buchili, during the swearing-in ceremony of two magistrates in Maputo.

A week ago, the director of the Zambézia Penitentiary Establishment announced that there were at least 209 people in pre-trial detention, a situation that has almost tripled the number of detainees in jail.

According to Álvaro Arnança, the penitentiary has 790 detainees, out of the 270 it should hold, and he points to the delay in processing prisoners' cases as one of the causes of this phenomenon.

Thus, during the swearing-in ceremony, the Mozambican Attorney General also reiterated the need to prevent and combat organized and transnational crime, as well as making the fight against corruption one of the priorities of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Buchili highlighted "the acts of drug and human trafficking, corruption, money laundering, among others, that have plagued the capital in recent times", "with increasingly complex characteristics".
