Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), one of the largest independent energy producers in southern Africa, achieved hydro-energy production of 8,013.6 GWh in the first half of 2023.

According to the company's press release, the figure exceeds the half-year production plan by 14.8% and by 0.6% compared to the same period in 2022.

HCB is also in the final stages of preparing for the implementation of projects to rehabilitate and modernize its electricity generation facilities.

The projects will have a multiplier impact on its production performance, while it has put in the portfolio the prospect of carrying out short and medium-term energy production projects using alternative sources, with emphasis on the construction of a photovoltaic plant of up to 400MW, with the possibility of developing it in the future.

In the long term, the company is conducting strategic reflections with a view to reactivating the Cahora Bassa Norte project, in order to meet the growing energy demand in Mozambique and the region, in the face of the ongoing crisis.

With regard to the reservoir's water resources, the HCB ended the first half of 2023 with 92.5% of its useful volume in storage.

This storage corresponds to a water surface level in the reservoir of 324.5 meters in relation to the average sea level, and is satisfactory to guarantee the budgeted production by the end of the year, estimated at 14,291.6 GWh.
