Mozambique on alert for floods and cholera outbreak

Cheias e surto de cólera deixam Moçambique em situação de alerta

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, warned yesterday of the risk of worse days ahead throughout the country, due to the floods, which are affecting more than 39,000 people, particularly in the province and city of Maputo.

Nyusi's warning was made this Tuesday (14), in Maputo, in a communication to the nation, in which the main point was the situation of the floods in the south of the country and the cholera that is already affecting 26 districts in the country.

"The next few days could still be dramatic in the country, since the weather forecasts indicate that there will be more rain, which could result in more flooding," warned Nyusi, quoted by VOA, who called for more vigilance on the part of the local authorities to prevent the population from returning to risk areas.

"We can't keep resettling the same people," said Nyusi.

School situation

Figures presented by Nyusi indicate that the floods, which have as their epicenter the town of Boane and some districts of the country's capital, have affected around three hundred schools, of which around 50 are in a critical situation.

In view of the situation, Nyusi authorized the local authorities to suspend classes for a period of one week in the schools considered critical.

Overall, the data indicates that at least 18,000 students are out of school.

Cholera risk

Since the start of the current rainy season in October last year, Mozambique has registered around 4,000 cases, most of them this year alone.

According to Nyusi's report, at least 32 people have already died from the so-called dirty hands disease.

"The challenge now is to work to ensure that there are no sources of contamination in the accommodation centers," Nyusi said.

It should be noted that, in addition to cholera, another situation that has the health authorities on edge is malaria, with thousands of cases and 83 deaths recorded.
