The number of HIV infections in Mozambique is higher among women and adolescent girls than among men and boys.

One in four women aged 35 to 39 is HIV-positive, equivalent to 26.6%, compared to 15.9% in men, according to the newspaper "Notícias", which cites data from 2021, taken from the National Survey on the Impact of the Epidemic (INSIDA).

In adolescents aged 15 to 18 years, HIV affects 4.5% girls, compared to 1.6% boys.

On the other hand, the study found that condom use is low in the country, especially among women.

"Among people aged between 15 and 24, with two or more sexual partners in the last two months, only 39.4% of women used the method, compared to 48.2% of men," reads the newspaper.

According to Eduardo Samogudo, there has been a decline in the use of the method to prevent diseases and unwanted pregnancies. In 2015, 49.9% of women with more than one sexual partner didn't use condoms and in 2021 the number dropped to 39.4%.

Despite this data, overall in Mozambique there was a slight reduction in the prevalence of the disease, which went from 13.2% in 2015 to 12.5% in 2021.

Meanwhile, the country has made progress in meeting the global HIV/AIDS response targets by 2025, which foresee 95% of people knowing their HIV status; 95% being on treatment and 95% achieving viral suppression.
